Random Thursday - a Week of Awesome

A snowfall in which every flake was composed of perfect crystals:

A Roman settlement, in the cold and windy wilds of Northumberland:

A rare red squirrel:

A walk on the Pennine way:

A magical contraption:

These are teasels, used to raise up the surface of a wool fabric - there are 3000 of them in this machine which stood in this position for 160 years until the 1970s:

Hmmmm.....

Lastly, the view I found on stepping into the garden this afternoon:

    1. Just in case camera info any use to anyone else:

We have just bought a new Canon Powershot SX260 HS (good price at Curry's). We had the earlier model, and in fact there is a new model out after this one we have.

I really like the macro mode which gets you in very close and sharp. I often set up the camera so that I can use it to point and click, but it is very adaptable to different situations (this model even has a mode for taking pics in snow which we've been playing with over the holidays).

The last one we had eventually got a tiny spot of fluff inside the lens and there was nothing we could do about it. But our cameras do take a lot of punishment as we cart them around all the time when out with the children who also use them.

I really like this one - I'm very lazy when it comes to technology so having a camera which can be used in a very basic mode, or a more fancy level when you want to play around with aperture etc is ideal.

I believe that Martha, at Weekend Doings, who takes really beautiful photos, uses a Nikon Coolpix, as well as a digital SLR. The Coolpix is one of the alternatives.

  8. Hi Catherine, I loved your post. so many different themes ...so many ideas! When I first looked at the snow flakes I thought, 'oh, how beautiful' and then I thought 'oh, what great quilt patterns! lol. I love ruins too. Wandering and wondering what went on there sooo long ago?! That loom is amazing, I always wondered what the thistle tops were for! And it looks like the bunnies decided to take the day off after there work out on Easter, very cute picture and inventive of your children! cheers, Claire W.

  10. Hope you had a great time in our locale, despite the cold and wind! Every time I visit I always feel sorry for any poor Roman soldier who found himself patrolling the always cold and windy Hadrians Wall :)

    Love your snowflake photos too.

  13. This is a wonderful post Catherine - I was just thinking that I hadn't seen you post for a bit and here you are. The last image is beautifully surreal and the snowflakes are just proof that nature is amazingly wonderful...but I really love the walk shot which 'looks' eerily quiet. Glad you have had such a lovely week.

  14. Those snowflake photos are absolutely stunning, but it was the strung up bunnies that had me laughing out loud.... I suspect little A is the culprit!
