Time Travelling

I was pulling things out from under the bed and came across this box of treasure:

There is a whole bundle of 60s and 70s cotton/polycotton, together with all these hexies

which I pieced round bits of Italian revision when I was about 15 (and had very neat handwriting):

One of the bits of fabric is actually this:

It's a tiered skirt I had sewed a year earlier, which I hoped would help me get off with a boy in my class!  I went potato picking to earn enough money for cowboy boots to wear with this skirt, but lost confidence and never bought them.  I didn't get the boy either - I was generally hopeless even if I did have neat handwriting and we just looked longingly at each other across the floor of the school disco.  I think I was supposed to ask my friend to ask his friend to ask him if he fancied a slow dance.

Earlier me:   if only you knew what you know now.  But what to make with the hexies?!

Do you have some fabric with a story attached?   Something from a special piece of clothing, or that was given to you by someone else?  I'd really like to hear about it.

If you like life stories, I thought this one in Live a Colorful Life's Farmer's Wife series was very touching.

It's the first of the month (July, who'd have thought it...) and I'm linking up to the Small Blog Meet at Lily's Quilts today - it's for bloggers with under 50 readers and it's always fun for discovering new blogs.  If you're visiting, hello:-)

  1. What a fun blast from the past! Though I'm afraid I have no suggestions for the hexies!

  2. what a fantastic find and a lovely memory trawl!! Hexies are the best! Just sew the little darlins together and you've got a quilt in the making!

We had almost identical handwriting! Mine's not so neat nowadays ... too much time typing I guess.

  5. What lovely memories! And very neat handwriting indeed :-) I don't have any projects with special fabrics, but I do have special, memory filled fabrics squirrelled away for future use :-)

  6. What a lovely story :) I wish I'd been into sewing growing up, but I really wasn't - in textiles at school I made a nightgown that didn't fit and a bag with no handle! Hope you enjoy working with the hexagons xx

  7. Great story to go with your fabric, weren't you good to keep these hexies together for this long!

I am thinking of making my husband a retirement quilt from his business shirts when he (hopefully) takes early retirement later this year.

  8. Oh my goodness, that had to be SO cool to open up that box of hexies!! I don't know if something I made when I was 15 would have ever made it this long, I'd probably have lost it somehow. That is so awesome!

  13. What a great story!! I'm a big fan of sentimental fabric purchases - ie. Kate Spain's Good Fortune because of our move to Japan; Katie Wisbrun's Brr! polar bears for a baby quilt for my sister (her favourite animal), etc. Makes it even more fun/meaningful to quilt!

  14. How wonderful and what a treasure! I have a quilt top that my mom started from her dresses in the 70s. I'm not sure if I want to finish the quilt or take it apart to make several quilts to share with family. She use to make her own dresses. :) great story.
